A product of GE’s SmartWater filtration series, the MWF replaces the previous models GWF, GWFA, GWF01, GWF06, and MWFA. NSF-certified, the company guarantees that the filter will reduce the contaminants in water, including mercury, lead, benzene, carbofuran, toxaphene, p-dichlorobenzene, and alachlor. Diarrhea-causing microorganisms like Giardia and Cryptosporidium are also filtered out.
The GE MWF Refrigerator Water Filter can filter 300 gallons of water with a flow rate of 0.5 gpm. It also comes with a 30-day warranty if there are any defects in the product.
This warranty, however, does not include home servicing for installation, product failure due to misuse, product tutorials, damage to the filter due to flood, accident or fire, damaged caused by defects in the refrigerator housing the filter, and filter cartridge replacement result from the water pressure being above the required pressure range of 40 to 120 non-shock psi.
The GE MWF water filter works on most models of GE and Hotpoint refrigerators. An adapter, however, is required when using the cartridge on the FXRC, FXRT, HXRT, MXRC, Kenmore 46-9905 and WR97X10006.
For a product that is being produced by a leading appliance company like GE, one is naturally expecting that the filter would work great. Surprisingly, this filter, like its predecessors, has earned mixed reviews.

Most reviewers are consistent in saying that those who have purchased the product should read the instructions carefully to ensure that they are installing it properly. This will save everyone the grief of voided warranties due to improper installation.
For meticulous buyers who have water meters installed in their homes, they have shockingly discovered that their filters did not get rid of the contaminants at all. One reviewer even went so far as to compare the contaminant level from the GE MWF filtered water as being exactly the same as ordinary tap water. He even went so far as to recommend GE filter buyers to make an additional purchase of a water meter to ensure the safety of the water coming from the filter.
Yet another reviewer complained by how fast the filter needs to be replaced. After only a month of use, the filter is already filled with trapped contaminants, so that the water coming out is a slow trickle.
While GE Customer Service is quick to respond with regards to legitimate product replacement claims, it can be disturbing if all the reviews report the same complaints of defective filter cartridges.
It is advisable to look into other water filter cartridges other than the GE MWF Refrigerator Water Filter if you want to spare yourself from hassles later on.
